Location, opening hours and attractions

The National Museum of Australia is on Lawson Crescent, Acton Peninsula, in Canberra.

We are open from 9am to 5pm every day of the year except Christmas Day.

As well as our great education programs, there is plenty to see and do at the National Museum in your own time. Make sure you allow enough time to explore these free attractions:

  • Circa – a rotating theatre that presents a 15-minute audiovisual feast of Australian history. Each quadrant seats 27 people; entry is at four-minute intervals.
  • Garden of Australian Dreams – an interpretive, interactive, landscaped courtyard accessible from inside the Museum.
  • Kspace – an interactive multimedia experience of designing your own building or vehicle. Takes approximately 15 minutes and accommodates groups of 12 students.
  • PS Enterprise – a fully restored and operational Murray River paddle-steamer moored at the National Museum on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.

Is there anywhere to eat at the Museum?
In addition to the café, there are ample areas for students to eat lunch including the outside decking area, the lake foreshore and in the event of inclement weather, the Hall.

Can students bring their bags into the Museum?
We prefer that students leave their bags on the bus. If this is not possible, limited bin space is available. The Museum takes no responsibility for personal items brought into the Museum.

How much time should we spend at the Museum?
We recommend that you allow an extra hour when booking into a paid program to enable your students to explore all that the Museum has to offer.

Can students take photographs while at the Museum?
Cameras can be used in permanent galleries, however photography is not allowed in temporary exhibition galleries.

How can I prepare students for their visit to the Museum?
Refer to the NMA website for helpful resources.

Does the Museum have a shop?
Yes, the shop is located in the Hall.
