Temporary exhibitions

Education kits, units of work and websites below were developed to support a temporary exhibition held at the National Museum. Each has also been designed as standalone resource for classroom use.

Yalangbara: Art of the Djang'kawu

'I am the man many generations, eldest son of eldest son, descended from Djang'kawu.' (Wandjuk Marika)

This education kit is for students from years 5 to 9 and comprises information and activities on four topics:

  • journey of the Djang'kawu to Yalangbara
  • Marika family artists
  • land rights through painting
  • the case of the counterfeit carpet

Yiwarra Kuju: The Canning Stock Route

'Welcome in, we want to tell you our stories.' (Ngalagnka Nola Taylor, 2010)

This education kit is for students from years 5 to 9 and includes:

  • an introduction and ideas for teachers, which may also be useful for older students
  • a map – to locate the stock route and local Aboriginal communities
  • enquiry activities – about key aspects of the exhibition
  • artist sheets – a set of 10 artworks from the exhibition, with questions to focus discussion

Who peopled the Pacific?

Students investigate this mystery using the resources of the Voyages of the Pacific Ancestors: Vaka Moana exhibition at the National Museum of Australia. The unit has been constructed around the proposed National History Curriculum due to come into effect in 2011. It combines an emphasis on understanding human migration with an awareness of the skills of historical enquiry.
